Poulticing - Why do we do it?

A poultice is a type of topical treatment that is applied to a horse's muscles or other body parts to provide therapeutic benefits. Poultices are made from a mixture of ingredients that are chosen for their ability to reduce inflammation, soothe pain, and promote healing.

Poultices are often used on horses after they have been exercised or trained to help prevent or reduce muscle soreness and stiffness. They can also be used to treat injuries such as sprains, strains, and bruises.

When a poultice is applied to a horse's muscles, it works by drawing out excess fluid and toxins that can accumulate in the tissues. This helps to reduce swelling and inflammation and can help to speed up the healing process. Poultices can also help to improve circulation in the affected area, which can help to bring more oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, further promoting healing.

The exact ingredients used in a poultice can vary depending on the desired effect and the specific needs of the horse. Common ingredients include natural clays, such as bentonite or kaolin, which have absorbent properties that can help to draw out toxins and impurities. Other ingredients may include Epsom salts, which contain magnesium and can help to relax muscles and reduce inflammation, or essential oils, which can have soothing and healing properties.

Poultices are typically applied to the affected area as a thick paste, which is then covered with a layer of damp cloth or paper and wrapped in a bandage or leg wrap to keep it in place. The poultice is left on for a specified period of time, usually several hours or overnight, before being removed and the area cleaned. We love Tuffrock Poultice!!!!
